Last week I received a spontaneous email from someone I don't know. Her words went straight to my heart and have created an impact greater than I can describe. Not only were her words incredibly touching, but I am struck by her thoughtfulness in taking the time to send them and to reach out to a stranger (me) to share her own feelings. Amanda Baar shared with me that she was inspired by Valerie to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast and how meaningful it has been for her. I can only imagine how meaningful it has been also for her 'little sister' and for the great organization that facilitates these bonds. This message has reminded me of how utterly good people are and how good we can be to each other. A few simple words, a caring gesture, an act of thanks... these things change the world. I am deeply touched and appreciative for Amanda's note and I am also grateful to have discovered through her outreach another organization that does incredible work. She is the director of Mission Able, a nonprofit that provides inclusive recreational, social and educational programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, bringing joy and creating connection in our community. Click here to learn more about it.
With Amanda's permission, her note is shared here.

Hello 🙂
My name is Amanda Baar, and I’ve wanted to reach out for quite some time.
Although I didn’t know Valerie personally, she lived in my apartment complex. After reading an article about her incredible devotion to helping others through Big Brothers Big Sisters, I felt inspired. That very week, I called to schedule an interview, and soon after I became a Big Sister.
It has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I’ve included a few photos of my Little Sister and me because I wanted to share with you and Valerie’s family that her legacy continues to live on through people who never even had the chance to know her.
This program has truly changed my life, and I will always be grateful that Valerie’s story inspired me to take that first step.
I hope it brings you and her family some comfort to know that her kindness and compassion continue to create a ripple effect in the lives of others.
Wishing you all a wonderful week.
With gratitude,
Amanda Baar
