Progress continues on the plans for the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center, with a key presentation scheduled for an upcoming March 2nd civic meeting. At last March's commission meeting, project planners had hoped to advance with approval of implementation and design concepts but were ultimately stymied by vocal community opposition that sent them back to the literal drawing board. This project has been under discussion since 2018, with a plethora of stakeholders involved in discussions about the specific site, size, budget and viability. Next week, the project leaders will return to the City Commission to present a revised proposal that incorporates feedback from many different parties and reflects modifications to the building location, flood planning, seating capacity, parking, integration with the Bay Park, and more. The potential approval of this initiative may introduce new construction to the area neighboring Tamiami Trail, and, ultimately, new amenities that are within easy walking distance of Alinari, Renaissance, the Quay, and more Downtown buildings.
